Issue Ten – 11 May, 2012

Pageant Timings

As mentioned in the last issue of the newsletter we are now able to share with you the core timings document that sits alongside the Generic Passage Plan, Schematic and Pageant Instructions. Along with instructions received from your Section Leader you should now have everything you need to plan your Pageant.

Click here to download the timings document

Please note that these documents have been developed for the safety of all on board your vessel and it is vital that you read them. They do not relieve boat skippers of their individual duty to draw up their own passage plan; neither the Thames Diamond Jubilee Foundation nor the Port of London Authority accepts any responsibility for individual vessel passage planning.

Notices to Mariners

The Port of London Authority (PLA) publishes Notices to Mariners providing essential information and advice to those navigating within the Port. Subjects include (but are not limited to) notification of works and events which may impact on navigation and notification of new and updated rules and regulations for navigation.

We ask that you read these important notices to assist you in your passage planning and recommend that you read and understand all of the Regulations, Byelaws and Notices To Mariners prior to navigating on the tidal Thames.

All Notice To Mariners can be found here: http://www.pla.co.uk/notice2mariners/index.cfm/site/navigation

Rules, Regulations and Guidance for navigation in the Port of London can be found here: http://www.pla.co.uk/display_fixedpage.cfm/id/2227/site/navigation

The PLA also publishes a number of very good Guidance Documents that can be found here: http://www.pla.co.uk/display_fixedpage.cfm/id/2226/site/navigation

Finally we recommend visiting the PLA Recreational Users Website which will assist you in planning you safe passage on the tidal Thames: www.boatingonthethames.co.uk

Media on board

For those of you that have agreed to host members of the media on board during the flotilla can we please ask you to remind them of the need to wear a lifejacket at all times and if you do not have a spare one for them, it is their responsibility to purchase or hire one.

In addition, please explain that they must be on board well ahead of the Pageant commencing and should make use of the water taxi facilities available to passengers and crew on the morning of the Pageant.

Should you have any problems in the planning of this, please contact: riverpageant@pagefield.co.uk

Boat of the Week: 441

441 was built by the British Power Boat Company Hythe for the RAF as a fast craft to rescue airmen ditched in the sea. Throughout the war she was stationed at Southampton, Ford Sussex, Littlehampton and Sheerness and those who served on her regarded 441 as a magnificent sea boat.

In May 1944, she rescued the entire crew of an American B17 Flying Fortress who had ditched in the Channel. The event was used by the British Power Boat Company in a promotional article in the May 1944 issue of `The Aeroplane` magazine.

441 also played an active role in the Channel on D Day, but was decommissioned in October 1951 and in 1956 was sold to Norman Kidd who maintained the craft while using her for leisure on the canals around Stourport on Severn for the next 50 years.

In 2004, Alistair Walker bought her and has embarked on a loving restoration to her original specifications. She is now ready for re-launch and proud to represent the RAF Museum at Hendon in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant, during which she will fly the RAF ensign by kind permission of the Chief of the Air Staff.
