Planning your Pageant

As part of our commitment to mitigating the risks involved in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant and to maintain the safety of all on board your vessel, the following documents have been developed for you in consultation with the appropriate marine advisors. These documents are being sent to you in the post, but in order that you can start planning your Pageant, we wanted to share them with you electronically here:

  1. Generic Passage Plan (click here to download): this is the plan for the Pageant which details the predicted height of tide and available air draft at each navigable arch on each bridge. You should study this passage plan very carefully in conjunction with the Pageant Instructions and the specific instructions that you will receive from your section leader and adapt it to suit your particular vessel. This generic passage plan is a guide to make your own planning easier and provide you with essential information.  It does not relieve boat skippers of their individual duty to draw up their own passage plan; neither the Thames Diamond Jubilee Foundation nor the Port of London Authority accepts any responsibility for individual vessel passage planning.

  1. Pageant Instructions (click here to download): these sit alongside the instructions that you will receive from your Section Leader. They are intended to give an overview of all plans with a key focus on safety.

  1. Flotilla Schematic (click here to download): this diagram depicts your position within your section and the flotilla as a whole. It should be used alongside the Passage Plan to understand which arches you will travel under and which vessels you need to stay aligned to at all times.

  1. Pageant Map (click here to download): this map gives you an overview of the Pageant route, but is not suitable for navigation.

It is vital that you read these documents and plans, fully comprehend them and adhere to the instructions and advice contained in them. We will be issuing the timings document that sits alongside these in next week’s newsletter. Should you have any questions or queries, please contact us: a.johnson@thamesdiamondjubileepageant.org

Kayak of the Week

This week we take a look at that intrepid band of river folk out in all weathers including the recent deluge of rain!

While many boats will power down the Thames with their crews and passengers waving flags from the deck, spare a thought for the dozens of kayakers heading down the river.  They will be paddling along flat-out at four knots to keep pace with the flotilla.

Nine of these kayakers are from an organisation called BLESMA The Limbless Veterans.  For them the challenge will be all the harder as they are all Serving or Ex British Military Forces who have suffered injuries or lost limbs during recent conflicts.  Kayaking is an ideal way for them to get fit again and participate in adventure sports as part of their rehabilitation program.

They will be paddling sea kayaks kindly loaned by P&H Sea Kayaks.  P&H is a UK based company that has been a world leader in kayak design and manufacture for 40 years.  Their kayaks can be found in all corners of the globe taking on the most challenging conditions nature can throw at them.  Stable and reliable, the Scorpio is the boat of choice for all levels of kayakers from beginners to seasoned professionals.
